3 Features That Every Document Storage Box Should Have

It's definitely in your best interest to make sure that you have a digital copy of all of you and your family's important documents in order to ensure that they are never lost. You will want to store them in on a secure, encrypted cloud. However, many people also feel much more comfortable having a physical copy of each important document on hand in case they should need it at a moment's notice. If you choose to keep the hard copies of the documents in your home, here are three features that any storage container you use should have.

1. Fireproof

One feature that your storage container should have is that it is resistant to fire. You can either purchase a box that comes pre-fireproofed, or you can purchase another type of container that works for you and then apply a fireproofing solution to the box. You can usually purchase fireproofing spray at hardware stores or office supply stores. Before you put your documents into a box that has been sprayed, you need to make sure that the box is dry. You don't want to inadvertently ruin your documents by getting them wet, so allow the box to dry overnight before using it.

2. Big Enough For Plastic Folders

The next feature that you need to look for is whether or not the container is large enough to contain plastic folders. Plastic folder are important because they make sure that if your box should be doused in water, your individual files will not be ruined. You can even purchase plastic folder that can be zipped shut or folded over so that no water is able to get in. However, each of these folders is going to be slightly larger than a normal folder and you want to be certain that any box you choose is able to hold them. You don't want to simply choose a plastic box because there is no way to keep the box from melting in the case of a fire.

3. Has a Lock

Finally, you will want to make sure that there is some sort of combination lock on your box to keep thieves from being able to steal your identity or those of your children or spouse. You will be storing sensitive information in this box, such as Social Security cards, and you want to make sure that these are protected. If you have a box that works, but doesn't have a lock, you can often take the box to a locksmith and have a lock added.
