Go Green by Understanding Recycling

What To Do With That Old Computer

Do you have a computer that was replaced by a newer model a long time ago, and the old model hasn't been used in years? You may be wondering what to do with that equipment that you no longer have a use for. Here are a few ideas for what you can do with an old computer.

Recycle It

One of the easiest things that you can do is recycle your old computer. There are many parts within the computer that still have value, such as the precious metals that are inside the machine to make circuit boards and various components.

The recycling process works by dropping off your equipment at a local computer recycling company. They will then disassemble the equipment and separate the parts into different categories. For example, there are cables, power supplies, motherboards, hard drives, and things of that nature. The materials will then be separated from the equipment to further refine them. This is when the gold used to form the motherboard will be removed or the copper is stripped from the power cables.

Donate It

Chances are that the computer you have is working just fine, but it has simply outgrown your personal needs. It is possible to donate the computer so that someone else can use it again, getting more life out of the equipment before it is discarded for good.

When donating a computer, it's always a good idea to completely wipe all your data from the device. Then you'll want to install a fresh copy of the computer's operating system so that it is ready to set up as if it is a new computer. Do not assume that others will know how to do this, because someone that is accepting a donated computer may not be the most tech-savvy person out there.

Repurpose It

You may not have thought of the different ways that a computer can be reused in your home. Some people use old computers as media centers, which are dedicated devices that are always on and allow others to stream movies, TV shows, and music from a shared device. You may also be able to turn the computer into a smart home hub, powering a screen in your home where you can control various devices. These are all purposes that require very little computer processing power but can benefit from having a dedicated device to make it work.
