Go Green by Understanding Recycling

Why Several States Have Made PC Dumping Illegal

When your business has a PC that it no longer needs, you might want to throw it into the trash. However, doing this is against the law in several states. Instead, you are best off recycling your PC or finding some other way to keep it out of a landfill.

Try To Sell Your Computer if You Can

When recycling your computer, you may not be able to recoup a lot of money from it since a defective PC is often not worth a lot. Also, if your PC is somewhat old, it's also unlikely to bring you a substantial return. However, if you have a newer computer that you no longer need, some companies will pay a larger sum to purchase your PC.

You might need to replace your PC sooner than you'd think since PCs improve at an alarming rate. Outdated computers that are recycled may be refurbished and donated to schools or sold to low-income customers. You'll also not have to worry about work being disrupted when a computer breaks down unexpectedly.

Protect the Environment By Recycling Your PC

Even if you aren't able to recoup some of what you spent on your PC, recycling electronics is important and often legally mandated because there is a growing number of computers that are being produced and ending up in landfills.

By recycling PCs rather than throwing them away, you will be conserving natural resources. Even if the computer is not operational, there are components, such as glass, that can be recycled and used in new products. There are also components found in a computer that are very bad for the environment.

Improve the Job Market

Electronic recycling also contributes to the economy by creating jobs. The more parts that are recycled, the more need there is for people to perform these jobs and the better this will be for employment rates.

Consider Your Data

Having your computer recycled is safe because your data will usually not be compromised due to the data storage device being destroyed. However, if you are concerned about your data, there is a setting that comes with the Windows OS that allows you to have your computer's data completely wiped so that it is prepared for recycling. There are also software programs that can delete data. Regardless of the decision you choose, make sure to dispose of your company's PCs properly when the time comes.
